PROJECT MANAGER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

MODULE 2

An AGC Construction Learning Tool for the Emerging Project Manager

 

The Southern Illinois Builders Association, in conjunction with the Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program, will continue to sponsor the new AGC of America Project Manager Development Program.  This five-course program covers the essentials of project management and provides a solid foundation for long-term career development.  The PMDP is a set of five highly interactive modules that include discussions, class activities and presentations, and provide participants the skills essential to their careers as project managers.

 

Course attendees may include assistant project managers, project managers, field engineers, project engineers, project administrators, etc. which may have experience as estimators, field personnel, project assistants or office managers, and may work in heavy and highway sector or commercial building sector.

 

The five modules include 16 hours of instruction each:  Module 1:  Estimating and Job Costing; Module 2:  Contract Administration; Module 3:  Project Administration; Module 4:  Risk Management; and Module 5:  Leadership.

 

Module 2: Contract Administration:  Understand how basic contracts are structured, how different types of contracts are used, and how project documentation relates to effective contracting.  Learn how different project delivery methods use different contracting strategies,m and gain insight into contract law and language in relation to project risk.  Topics discussed will include:  Introduction to Construction Law and Project Contracting; Contract Basics; Negotiating Fair Contracts; Contract Documents; Payment Terms; Legal Issues; Contracting with Others for Required Work; and Contract Termination.

 

Module 2:  Contract Administration is scheduled for:

 

            WHEN:            Tuesday evenings beginning on October 13 for 6 weeks concluding

                                           November 17

            TIME:               6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

            COST:              $150 per student (need of minimum of 10 students to conduct class-

                                          maxiumum of 20)

SUPERVISORY TRAINING PROGRAM

Supervisory skill—or the lack of it—directly affects every company’s bottom line. Each day decisions made by every foreman and superintendent are crucial to the success or failure of every construction project. You make your money in the field. Or you lose it.

The Southern Illinois Builders Association, Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program and the Southern Illinois Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Committee will sponsor two STP Classes.

Below is a list of what Units will be available and when/where they will be held:

STP UNIT #9 – PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT

This course includes the following sessions: Improving Productivity through Pre-Planning; “MORE”- Four New Skills for the Effective Supervisor; Personnel Management; Making a Job Look Like a Firm; Equipment Management for Productivity Improvement; Productivity Improvement and Planning and Scheduling; Managing Subcontractors; Quantifying Lost Labor Productivity; Record Keeping, Control, Changes and Defect Analysis; and Improving Productivity with New Technology.

DATES: Starts Saturday, October 17, 2009.  Remaining Class Dates to be determined at October 17 class

This course includes the following sessions: Construction Estimates; Who Controls Project Costs; Reporting and Analyzing Actual Costs; Planning for Cost Control; Labor Cost Control; Controlling Subcontractors; Loss Prevention; Cost Control Strategies; and Post-Project Evaluation.

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY MANAGEMENT

FOR CONTRACTORS

The Southern Illinois Builders Association and Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program will present a course on Construction Quality Management (CQM) which offers individuals the opportunity to satisfy the training requirement specified in most Corps of Engineers and Naval Facilities Engineering Command construction contracts. This course must be taken and passed by any contractor aspiring to do work for the Corps or NAVFAC. To successfully complete this course the student must be present for all  sessions and achieve a passing grade of 70 on the written test given at the end of the course. A certificate will be issued to all students who satisfactorily complete the course. This certificate will be good for 5 years and is good for both Army and Navy projects. This course will be taught by John E. Parker, III, PMP who is retired from the NAVFACSE and has over 40 years of experience in the construction industry.
